This page will be used to keep the public updated on our progress.  It will also be used by the Old Sow staff to post filming and production schedules.

We are currently planning to create new films through Old Sow Films.  We will plan to produce at least one feature and possibly some shorts or more features.

Film Proposal Guidelines
Do you have a project that you'd like for the youth group to begin production on?  See if your project meets the guidelines of Old Sow Film Productions.

We have a new online calendar.
Please check it periodically so you will stay informed on meetings and film schedules.

Channel 456 We have filmed our first three episodes of Channel 456 and we hope to produce more in the future.

Lycanthropy After you shoot a werewolf, he returns to human form.  Sure the nightmare of the monster is over, but how do you proof it to the police?  Lycanthropy picks up where most werewolf movies end, trying to prove innocence and sanity in a terrible situation. Lycanthropy is one part "The Wolf-Man" one part "A Beautiful Mind" and one part "Job."

Re:traction Re:traction is a sci-fi mystery that investigates recapturing words long after they are no longer heard by the human ear.

Xpatriot The proposed feature, Xpatriot, is on hold for now.  Jeff is working on writing the script and he wants to wait until we have more experience and funds before we tackle this feature.  This will be shot on film.

Pre-Production
Stern Swift and the Defenders of Justice The crews of the SS Champion have just received orders to head into the Goyema sector.  The crew begins wonder if the Admiral Kurios is giving them all of the information about this mysterious part of space.  Principle photography starts May 6th 2005!

The Good Samurai Eucharist is a short film about the Lord's Supper.  This will be a 5 minute short shot on 16mm film and using some mini dv.  Jeff will be using his Kodak 16mm camera that he got on eBay.

Production
Bad Alice An 8-year old girl is behaving quite nicely in her room when there is a commotion in her closet.  Out comes Alice who causes chaos and gets the little girl in big trouble.
Eucharist Eucharist is a short film about the Lord's Supper.  This will be a 3 and a half minute short shot on 16mm film and using some mini dv.  Jeff used his Kodak 16mm camera that he got on eBay.  He also incorporated some video stock shot for CSI: Jerusalem.  Jeff is planning on shooting another reel of 16mm film to complete the project.

David, Behind the Psalms We are filming a mock-documentary about the career of king/musician David..  It is like Behind the Music meets E True Hollywood Story with David being a hybrid of Elvis-like pop star.  David's exploits and military accomplishments will be retold as album tours and tragedies.  We started filming some interviews on March 17th, 2004.

Post-Production
Looking for a Home On March 14, 2003, we had our camera's ready to film a concert video for Micah Vierling.  We got some great footage and are now in post production.  Looking for a Home is currently in Post Production with Baby Blue Sky and Further Away already edited.

Film Proposal Guidelines

New film proposals need to be submitted in two parts.  There needs to be a one page summary of the film submitted to Old Sow Film Productions.  Once that proposal has been approved, there will be a personal proposal that will be presented to Old Sow Film Productions.  This short visual presentation can include story boards, live acting of parts and even include the use of photos, video, props and costumes pertinent to the story.

All proposals need to meet the following four criteria in order to be considered:

  • Spiritual in Nature
  • Original in Content
  • Possible in Achievement
  • Shared in Production

Spiritual in Nature
Old Sow Film Productions will be a ministry minded group.  Every line and every scene does not have an overtly spiritual context, but the over all message should be in line with scripture.  Currently, the process of making the film is tied in with creating a production bible study.  The film should also have potential for spiritual applications after its release.

The first film, The Face in the Mirror is a good example of this guideline.  It was spiritual in nature, but it was also applicable in every day life.  We used our bible study in James to prepare and it is very adaptable for other groups who wish to study the book of James.

We are going to be very flexible with this rule in our film shorts.  Many of our 1 to 5 minute film shorts will be exercises in making a film.  Therefore they still need to be films to that are appropriate and moral.  Ideally, they should have a spiritual application in the presentation if it is not in the film itself (i.e. it is something that can be used in a class or discussion about a spiritual topic).

Original in Content
We want original stories.  We do not want stories that have told again and again.  We can borrow and even retell stories in an original way.  Basically, we want the screenplays to be written by our people.

Possible in Achievement
It needs to be able to filmed and edited with what we have available.  Special effects and costumes are possible, but we need to make sure that we can afford them with our tight budget.

Shared in Production
Finally, Old Sow hopes to involve as many of the youth and adult sponsors as we can.  Therefore the script proposals should have enough parts to involve our people and not so many parts that we can not cast the film.

Current Project Information

Limbo - Projects on hold

The Untitled Colossians Project

As you may have heard, The Face in the Mirror started off as a Bible Study in youth group.  We were studying the book of James and I challenged the youth group to come up with a script based on that study.  The challenge has been given again.  This Spring the Junior High Youth Group will be conducting a chapter by chapter study on the book of Colossians.  After that, we will work on writing a screenplay and start filming.  This time, we are going to concentrate on making it a short film - under 20 minutes and work more on planning and rehearsals.

This project is on hold and may never be made.  We are too busy with other stories.

Deer Island Stories

Years ago we were in the planning stages for a documentary series called Deer Island stories.  We realize that we have an advantage that other Canadian filmmakers do not have.  We live on Deer Island.  Although it does keep us from many of the resources that other filmmakers enjoy.  However, that means that we get to tell the rich stories from our little island.

Deer Island Stories will be a documentary series.  Each episode will be around 10 minutes.  This endeavour will give us the opportunity to work on our filmmaking skills.  It will also allow us to showcase our island to the whole world.  Also the episodic approach will give us some flexibility for use.  They can be stand alone shorts or can be combined to make a larger tape or television special.

Proposed Episodes The Old Sow - in planning stage
Whale Watching - in planning stage
Deer Island and WWII
The Rise and Fall of Eastport
Lobster
Industry
Aquaculture
Ferry Life
The Prime Minister Takes a Break

In Development - Planned projects

Xpatriot

Xpatriot is a proposed feature film.  Jeff has written a rough screenplay for this project but has decided to shelve it for now.  He wants to wait until they are ready to do it justice.  In short it is a story of a fishing family that moves to South America in hopes that the less restrictions on aquaculture would turn into a quick profit.  Instead they find themselves in the middle of a coup and only the matriarch and her daughter in-laws survive.  She returns home with her South American daughter in-law as a broken woman.  She was once a proud member of the local elite and now she is broke and bitter.  Her daughter in-law decides pack fish in order for them to survive.  Then she and a mysterious new man (who they find out to be a relative of their deceased husbands) decide to work on the greatest of schemes.  They restore her mother in-law's hope and life.

This is a modern retelling of the book of Ruth.

Lycanthropy

Is that a real silver bullet?  Joel Bishop finds out that hard way that it takes much more than silver bullets to finish off the curse of a were-wolf.  It takes a good lawyer.  Joel unwillingly takes a wild ride that will take everything he ever had.  However, he will find himself in the process.

Pre-Production - Projects we are actively working on

The Good Samurai

(2006) Pre Production

Imagine the story of the Good Samaritan told as a B Grade Kung Fu Flick with kid actors.  The action will be cheesy, the costumes fake and the lips will be out of the synch with the dialogue.  It is going be shot on 16mm film instead of mini dv tape like all our previous films.  It is slated for a spring shoot in 2006.  We will be seeking assistance form the New Brunswick Filmmaker's Co-op and other agencies on this one.  We have to wait until Stern Swift is completed before we can start writing grants and applying for assistance.

Week One:

Filming order:  This was not a film shoot, but a video test that we did today.  We had come kids come over and Geoff Clarke did some stunts with the kids.  I will edit it to make a trailer for promotion.  This will also help us plan the film shoot a little better.  We also got some Halloween costumes and we wanted to see what they would look like.

Week Two:

Filming order:

In Production - Projects being filmed.

Eucharist                                                                   eucharist.jpg (68151 bytes)

(2005) In Production Run Time 3+ Minutes

Eucharist is an experimental short film.  Most of the film was shot on 16mm black and white stock.  The rest of the film was shot when we recorded the passion play for CSI Jerusalem.  This film will be a look into personal examination that people engage in when they partake of the bread and the cup of the Lord's Supper.  Jeff is interested in shooting another roll of B&W 16mm film to complete this project.

Week One:

Filming order:  It got a reel of black and white film for my 16mm Kodak camera and I shot some footage at the church of the communion plates.  I took some shots of me crushing grapes and breaking flat bread.  Finally, took some bread and juice to people and filmed them having communion.  my friend Chris Giles processed the film by hand and I sent it away to have it transferred to mini-dv so I can edit it.

Week Two:

Filming order:  It was all in negative so I had to reverse the stock first and then I had to slow it down.  My camera is so old, it shot it in 12 or maybe 18 fps (I think it might be 12 though).  The good thing is that it saved on footage.  I added in some of the video stock that we shot last year for CSI Jerusalem from the Smythe Street play.  I did some video paint work to accentuate some of the elements (bread and the cup).  I might shoot another reel to beef it up.  It was not very well framed, some of it is out of focus and it was over exposed, so it is an art film.  It actually looks pretty cool that way.  You can see the rough version if you like here.

Post-Production - Projects filmed but not finished

Looking for a Home

On Friday March 14 2003, Micah Vierling performed a concert at his home church in St. George, New Brunswick.  He had have a full band (Keyboardist Brad, Bassist Jeff and Drummer Jeremy) as well as his wife accompanying on vocals with lights and top notch sound.  He is using a recording of the concert to make a live CD.  Old Sow Film Productions was there to film the live concert to create a live concert video.  We are currently in post production on this project.  The audio was captured on an analog tape and synching is proving to be very difficult.
